On Stand By...

Natalie was on stand by today as an on site alternate.  Was able to practice twice.  As well as watch some good tennis today.  Her and Sanaz are alternates for doubles and more than likely will not make it into the draw.  Not a surprise that is for sure.

Must say I was a lil star struck today, seeing some of the "big" names in tennis arrive for practice.  Was amazed at how small some of the ladies are in size.  Much different then how they look on television.  Maybe one day Natalie will be one of the "big" names in tennis....eh??  Well, in my bias opinion .....she already is....wink!

Although Natalie did not get in the draws for the Family Circle this year, we sure are learning much while here.  Most important lesson being that she belongs here at this level.   It is a different world, different people, rules and officials.  Very happy that we came here to learn.

Tomorrow, we will check dubs and then if not "in"...we will head for home.  To regroup prior to heading to Pelham, Alabama next weekend.  Time to tuck in for the night!  Happy Easter!

Charleston

We made it to Charleston so Natalie could sign in as an alternate for the Family Circle. She just missed getting into the qualifying draw, and is here today as an alternate. Meaning if someone gets sick or hurt at the last minute Nat would replace them.

Tomorrow, Natalie and Sanaz will "sign in" with the hopes of getting into the dubs draw. We should know by early afternoon if they will get into the draw.

As for the rest of today, Natalie will practice several times and we will watch matches. Learning many things about the "process", a good thing.

Will update once we know if and when the Lil yellow ball will bounce again. ... Until then Happy Easter... Love and Blessings... Sherry!

With our good byes said for the second time....

With our good byes said for the second time, we headed north today.  Many thanks again to Randi, Drew, Riley and Nana Julie for taking such great care of us.  The fellowship, great food and plain ole fun.... and our hearts were filled with joy.  With a quick stop in Gainesville for a "hit" with Alex and we were on the road again.

Spending the night just outside of Hilton Head on I95 so that we will be less then two hours from our destination.  Where are we going now?  To Charleston, for the Family Circle tournament.  We decided since Charleston is in "our region", Natalie would sign in as an on site alternate.  According to the records from last year, many did the same and got into the qualifier draws.  Since we can drive to the site and have a place to stay, thought the risk was worth taking.  If she doesn't get in, we will head for home to train prior to heading to Pelham.

We are both looking forward to meeting Ashley and her family.  As well as meeting the city of Charleston for the first time.   Have heard so many wonderful things about the city for many years.  Guess we will have to narrow down the choices of sites to see, but at least we have a starting point.  We really want to do the ghost tour, just don't know if both of us will be able to survive it.  For we are chickens and will probably scream at everything.  Maybe we should take someone with us to video US....hahahahah!  Anyway, we are excited!

Time to sign off,  and get ready to tuck in for the night.  Something Natalie has already be able to do.  So, until the yellow ball bounces.....Love and Blessings....Sherry!

Unfortunate end today....

Our stint in Florida came to an unfortunate end today.  Losing in the Round of 16 of doubles was not our plan, but guess it was God's plan.  Natalie played a great match and I'm very proud of her effort.  Tomorrow we will head north to Gainesville for a practice.  Haven't quiet decided the plan of action for after the hit.  Natalie has till 9 o'clock to let me know what she has decided to do.   The choices are....go home for a couple of days or head straight to another tourney and sign in as an alternate.  Both are very good choices so we will see what happens here shortly.

Talk about spoiled.....that is what we are!  Nana Julie....Randi, Drew, Riley ...other wise know as the Labriola family have been wonderful to us.  Currently, Natalie is having a massage in Randi's clinic room.  Yes, Randi is a MT....yes....Natalie is being spoiled staying here.  And Randi has been kind enough to work on my knee and leg....spoiled indeed.  Not to mention the great meals and fellowship.  And let's not forget our wonderful presents.....we received our very own Spongers t-shirts.  We can't wait to wear em.  We will hate to say good bye to these awesome folks, but we will look forward to seeing them again in the future.

Thank you sooooo much ....much love to you!

The good news of the day.....

It has been a while since I've had to get up at 6:41 a.m. to get ready to head to the courts.  But this morning we were out the door by eight.  Headed south on I75 two hours to The Oaks Club in Osprey, Florida.

After winding our way through the luscious green golf course of the Oaks Club, we came to the courts.  Natalie practiced with Chi Chi Scholl, her potential dubs partner for this one.  Potential because if their 424 ranking wasn't good enough they would have jockeyed at the last moment for replacements.

At 11:40 a.m., I made my to the tournament desk to see what the dubs entry list looked like.  With 20 minutes till the deadline, noticed that a few more teams signed in after "our team".  One of them being ranked 9th in the world.....yes....9th in the world.  Why are they at a 50K???  They are out of the Sony and needed something to do of course, while they wait to go to Charleston.

Anyway, during that 20 minutes....the dubs "cut off" went from 690 to 494 with 5 minutes to go to deadline.  It was a frenzy of players and coaches trying to find partners with good enough rankings to "bump" another team out in order to get into the draw.  With 20 SECONDS to spare, Fichman crossed off her original partner's name and added another name.  By doing so, she went from first alternate team to like 13th team "in".  Of course, the team she bumped by making the changes were present and not too happy.  The drama of it all.  For the record....Tony Jones....you would have loved it!

With all the last 5 minute changes the ranking "cut off" finished at 454.  Which is extremely tough dubs for a 50K tourney.  Mel Oudin didn't get make the draw with her partner, they were second alternate.  The last three spots were filled with Americans as wild cards.  Crazy indeed!

Having said all that, I'm very happy and proud to say that Natalie and Chiara Scholl will play third on tomorrow.  They will play the 459th tourney ranked team of Veronica Cepede Royg (PAR) and Ines Ferrer-Suarez (ESP).

Florida Update....yea we are still alive

We found out yesterday evening that Natalie did not make it into the qualifying draw in Osprey, Florida.  Like the past three tourneys here in Florida, the field is unbelievably strong.   The "Q" draw's player rankings begin at 135 in the world to the last accepted being 236.  That is a crazy strong draw for a 50K.  And again, no one can seem to explain why such there is a high concentration of highly ranked players attending these four Florida tourney.

Tomorrow, we will drive to Osprey to register for doubles.  Natalie is hoping to play with Chi Chi Scholl.   However, with there being so many strong players here, there may be some last minute partner jockeying to get into the draw.  We will know by 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon if she gets into dubs.

Below are some pics I thought I would share....please enjoy!  Forgive me if names are spelled wrong!

Today's Dubs and Osprey

Even tho today's results were quiet what we expected or wanted.  Natalie was on fire during the dubs match.  You could tell she was enjoying playing dubs with Allie.  She had her wheels on and was getting to everything.  Not dismissing Allie at all, was playing her heart out as well.

We had plenty of chances to win this match but it just didn't happen.  We were up several games only to lose them with an unforced error on game point cost.  We were the more aggressive team but we didn't play as aggressive as we did the other day or we are capable of playing.  A credit to the opposing team for using the lob very affectively, something we forgot to use.  Natalie and Allie are a good team, a little more time on the court together could produce big results.

By the way the opponents were the 4th seeded team of Alize Lim (FRA) and Ashleigh Barty (AUS).  This team was tourney ranked 347.  We were tourney ranked 470.

We will spend the next couple of days where we are training.  And waiting to see if Natalie will get into the 50K Osprey tourney.  A tourney that is attracting very highly ranked players.  When I checked yesterday, Natalie was 60 out of it.  Even tho she may not get into the singles draws, hopefully she will get into the doubles draws.

An update will be posted as soon as we get some updated info to provide...until then....Love and Blessings....Sherry

Fourth on Today....but.....

Natalie and Allie will play fourth after ten today.  However, maybe some delays in the timing of it.  The match they play the winner of....didn't finish yesterday due to the weather.  One of the ladies in that match has singles, after which she can take up to an hour and half break (her choice).  Then they will finish dubs match, after which some type of break will be given.  Length of break will be determined by who wins and how much time they want or are given.  Then......our team can play.  So, we are thinking 4-5ish.

On my way to the courts here in a minute.  Gunna watch the lil yellow ball bounce very soon....Love and Blessings....Sherry

They clicked....

A day that started with Natalie on the court for practice at 8:00 a.m., is finally winding down.  The dubs match was pushed back to about 4:30 due to many long matches early on.  For the first time partnering, Natalie and Allie clicked...and.....clicked well.  Winning the first set 6-1.  Perez and Molinero didn't give up, they continued to battle in the second.  But Natalie and Allie were serving very effectively allowing the net person to close the point.   Classic dubs for most of the match.  However, there were some crazy points which were exciting for spectators.  Our team won the second set 6-4.  A great way to start their quest for a title.

Following the match Natalie decided she wanted fajitas, homemade fajitas.  We headed to the store and then to the kitchen.  Following our fabulous dinner, we made breakfast burritos.  So our morning will be filled with more yummy homemade food.  Yay us!  The simple things in life!

Our team has the day off tomorrow.  It will be a practice day and Natalie will teach a clinic.  Tomorrow's clinic is for about sixty children, it will be tons of fun.  Meanwhile, I'm hoping to make the 2 block walk....  safely....to the beach.  Many may remember what happened to me the last time I attempted this very same walk.

On Thursday, Natalie and Allie will face the winners of a match to be played tomorrow.  The pairs are Ashleigh Barty (AUS) and Alize LIM (FRA)   OR   Conny Perrin (SUI) and Masa Zec-Peskiric (SLO).

Until the lil yellow ball bounces on Thursday....I will walk safely to the beach....say a prayer.....Love and Blessings.....Sherry!

An error was made....Natalie and Allie will play tomorrow instead of Wednesday.  So, they are forth on after 10, so 3ish.  Nite!

Waiting for the sun and the schedule.....

Here we are waiting for the sun and the schedule for tomorrow to come out.  Although we do know that Natalie and her partner Allie Will will not play tomorrow.  Their first dubs match will be on Wednesday.  This tourney has one of the toughest dubs draws we have seen for a 25K.  The "cut off" is 497.  ("cut off" is the ranking of the last team into the draw)  Our team is tourney ranked 470, so we were one of the last to get into the main.

Our team will play the tourney ranked 383rd team of Adriana Perez (VEN) and Florencia Molinero (ARG).  Which some of you may remember, Nat and Niki lost to them in Port St. Lucie.    The opponents are nice ladies as well as players, so this will be a great first match.

Today, Natalie practiced twice and is currently napping.  She will get up shortly to go "hit" with our host Drew.  Following that will be the ProAm, which is looking forward to being a part.  When we were here in January, she had a blast at this event.

Tomorrow, will be practice and then some dubs practice.  They have arranged to play a practice match since her and Allie have never played together.  That will be fun, for Brett and his "old" college partner will take em on....and ....yes....the trash talk has already begun.

So off of here, need to ready thy self for the lil yellow ball will commence to bounce shortly......Love and Blessings.....Sherry.

Many thanks to Irma, Marilyn and Ester

Many thanks to our hostesses in Orlando.........

Today's Court Update....

Soooooo, today didn't go as planned.  Natalie lost in two sets 1-6, 2-6.  Started out strong and didn't stick with the game plan and it cost her.  So, now she will focus on dubs with Allie.  Which will begin either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Today's Match

Natalie is about to take to the court. She is playing in the Qualifier. Her opponent is #6 seed Beatriz Garcia-Videgany (ESP), ranked 239 in the world. Gotta go...the Lil yellow ball just began to bounce.... Love and Blessings... Sherry

Totally Spoiled...thanks Ester, Irma and Marilyn

Must say that Natalie and I are being totally spoiled with great home made food and pastries.  So much so that Natalie said that we are taking Grandma Ester home with us.  I said, "we are going to have two grandmas live with us".....her reply...."yea, this one cooks"!  Can't argue that, Ester cooks and does it sooooooo well.  We have had her delicious chicken, rice and beans.  And today, spaghetti and meatballs.  Meanwhile, Irma is baking pastries and cookies.  Yes my friends, we have died and gone to heaven.  We are so thankful to have Ester, Irma and Marilyn taking such great care of us!  Thank you ladies!

Today was a practice day.  Tomorrow is a match day.  Natalie and Sanaz will play second on after ten...sooo 11:30ish.  The will play #842 Trang P D Huynh (VIE) and Huachin Lee(TPE).  The winner to play the semi final match shortly following this match.

Tomorrow will be filled with many lil yellow bouncing balls....so until then....Love and Blessings....Thing 1!

Are we Swamp Things??

Since we have been living in the swamp since Monday, does that make us The Green Swamp Things? Thing One and Thing Two?   Hmmm

With all the matches being pushed from Tuesday to yesterday, the schedule was a little crazy.  But kudos to Dessie and Billie for making it work.  "Our" doubles match got on a little before five, right after one of the opponents returned from her free pottery class.  Priorities ya know......hahahahah

The first set saw Natalie and Sanaz teetering up and down until they won it 6-4.  During the second set, "our" team was down for most of it.  We weren't striking the ball well.  And the opponents were doing their jobs well.  So onto a breaker we went.  Well....we were suppose to go anyway....however we didn't show up for a while....a very long painful viewing mile.....until we were down 1-5.   But then....<<cue music>>  ....."we" showed up and won 7 points in a row to make it 7-5.  Amazing indeed, "we" began to strike the ball well and the pressure contributed to the opponents making a few errors.  Winning 10-8 in a breaker.....in Pluskota exciting fashion.

Today, will be another practice and fitness day.  For Natalie and Sanaz will have the day off from match play.  In an effort to get the draws caught up, so to speak.  The will play two matches tomorrow, after winning the first of course.  They will play the winner of today's match of #842 Trang P D Huynh (VIE) and Huachin Lee(TPE)  --  #1949 Sherry Li(USA) and Eva Raszkewicz(USA).

As a very important side note......God Bless our new Pope....Francis the First!  May he lead Christians to a future of change, hope and happiness!

Until the lil yellow bouncing ball hits the ground....I say sooo long....Love and Blessings....Sherry!

In a land far, far away....known as Orlando....a ProAm

In a land far, far away.....known as Orlando......a ProAm

Greetings from The Green Swamp....

Greetings from The Green Swamp.  Never thought I would say that, being an non Gator fan, but last night we began our stay at the wonderful Irma's home.  Which happens to be in The Green Swamp.  And "yes" they have gators here of the four legged style.  And "yes" my camera is ready.

Packed up and left the Disney area and headed to the courts.  Yesterday, was a great day of practice and the Pro Am.  Hitting twice, along with a training work out kept Natalie busy for the better part of the day.  A quick bite to eat and it was Pro Am time.  Which of course is Nat's favorite of any tourney.  She and five other pros matched up with club members and sponsors to play mixed doubles.  She and Kurt placed in the top, behind a few antics of their own.  Some good ole trash talk, a few trick serves and second place was secured.  Guess my favorite antic was, what I call the "Prince Charming" serve by Natalie.  Now mind you, Kurt is about 6'4" or so...he would kneel in front of the serving Nat and toss the ball up for the serve.  Then he would turn around and run for his position at the net.  Toooooo funny indeed, but very effective.  Must say the duo make a heck of a good mixed dubs team.

The pictures will be posted as soon as I get a chance.

Following the great time on the court, Tom and Frank corralled us to a tasty treat and social.  They and the rest of their staff at the Orlando Tennis Center are working very hard to do a great job.  We so appreciate their efforts.

Our day wasn't over yet.  We were invited to dinner by Frank, a Pro Am player.  He opened his restaurant and cooked dinner for us.  His wonderful salad, lamb and rice hit the spot after a very long day.   Many thanks to Frank honoring us with his cooking and great fellowship.  If you are ever in the downtown Orlando area we would recommend Frank's place.....great food.....The New Harvest.

The day wasn't over yet, we needed to head to The Green Swamp and ooo yea.....unpack....the dreaded unpacking.  But we did it and enjoyed settling in for the night.

Ding...ding....Nat's alarm...gotta goooo....sooo here is the scoop for today....

Natalie is playing doubles with Sanaz Marand and they are seeded #2.  They will play the wild card team of Olena Leonchok (UKR) and Michele Sammens (RSA).  The match is third on after ten, but weather may be an issue.  So that is code for 2ish if the sun is shining.

Gotta go...the hair is still wet....the yellow bouncing ball is calling me.....Love and Blessings....Sherry!

Natalie will take to the practice court

After taking some time off to rest a slightly strained muscle, Natalie will take to the practice court today.  We were lucky enough to be treated by Lorrie and Craig Sheffer to a night stay at their time share.  So, we made the most of it.  Was able to secure a ticket for Disney for Natalie and she was joined by my future daughter in law Marilyn.  Marilyn's first time to Disney.   Opting for a "cheap"ticket to see the Braves play a spring training game was a good choice for me.  All of us had fun on our "day" off.

As said prior, Natalie will only be playing doubles this week.  Too hard on the body to do four tourneys in a row.  Therefore, she will practice and do dubs.  For some reason the "make up" of the draws for these four tourneys in Florida is really tough.  This Orlando tourney is a 10K and the cut off for the main is around 140.....crazy good for a 10K.  The wild card one seed for the qualifier is 155....sooo tough a draw.  Side note:  she's a wild card cuz she just showed up and asked to play because she's in Florida for another tourney next week and didn't want to sit idle.  Many weren't happy bout that chain of events.  Not sure if this is rumors or facts.

Most of the time 10K tourneys have many non ranked players in the qualifier.  So, to see these draws so tough is very unusual to say the least.  Next week, is a 25K in Innisbrook.  Natalie isn't even in the qualifier yet,  she is 5 out.  The main draw cut off is around 140.  Again, really tough for a 25K.  And the following week is Osprey 50K....Natalie is 151 out of the qualifier.  Just as a point of reference,  by all "theories", Nat should be in the qualifier of both tourneys.  The tennis world is buzzing about these tourneys being jammed with top players and as to why.  If you figure it out....let us know....cuz most of us are just baffled by it.

The lil yellow ball will begin to bounce in dubs match play either Tuesday or Wednesday, we will find out tonight.....until then....Love and Blessings.....Sherry!

Today did not goes as planned

Today did not goes as planned.  Instead of  single and dubs wins under her "waistband",  Natalie is finding herself out of the tourney.  Unfortunate indeed!  For some reason she struggled in singles... instead of settling into her game and stroking the ball.  And doubles was just as unfortunate, with our team losing in two sets, with just as many errors as chances to win the thing.  Oooo well, we pack up and make our way to Orlando tomorrow.

Natalie will only play doubles in Orlando.  Planned that way, in order for her to have a break and not play four tourneys in a row.  Sticking to the quality vs. quantity game plan.

Until Orlando....Love and Blessing....Sherry

An update from the sunny...."Sunshine State"

An update from the sunny...."Sunshine State"!  Soooo very happy to say that it has been sunny here, altho it was very windy and cold today.  We were very thankful Natalie didn't have to play today.  She practiced twice and rested.

Meanwhile, I had lunch with a friend.  He lives here in Florida, and is unique in the fact that he is currently on the waiting list for a double lung transplant.  Tim is a single dad of a 6 year old son.  He is truly inspirational, whether he realizes it or not.  <<I'm atop my soapbox>>  PLEASE....BE A ORGAN DONOR!  Tim and others like him are waiting for a miracle, the miracle of a donor's unselfish act to help others.  Be a Hero.....Be a Donor!

<<<<stepping down>>>

After a quiet evening in the hotel, Natalie is currently tucked in for the night.  That 8 o'clock wake up will come before we know it.  So, here is the scoop for tomorrow.  Natalie will play singles first on at 10 o'clock.  Her opponent is a qualifier, who will be playing her fifth of this tourney.  Which of course works in Nat's favor, since its only her second match....and she had today off.  Natalie actually faced this opponent on the double's court yesterday.  Ms. Benetez (ARG) (713) will play Natalie tomorrow.

Then Nat and Em will play dubs forth on....or...3ish.  Their opponents will be Abaza/Robinson, both from the USA.  Natalie has faced both of these ladies on the dubs court before, but never as a team.  They were both matched up with different partners.  Should be very good dubs, with for nice players.

There is the scoop from today and for tomorrow.  Sooooo until then and till that lil yellow ball starts bouncing will you hear from me.....Love and Blessings....Sherry!

After much drama....it was over....

Singles started at noon almost on the dot.  And two and half hours later and much drama it was over.  The drama came from the lack of experience of the chair umpire.  Kudos to both players, Natalie and Nika both took the "high" road.  It was awesome to see these two young ladies conduct themselves with truth and honesty.....sometimes not always the case in the heat of battle.  Both players found themselves correcting the chair umpire's calls....in favor of their opponent.  It was the craziest thing ever.  Natalie finally requested that the supervisor be summoned to the court.  Thank goodness they were playing on clay and the players were able to prove their case for their opponent easily.

Unfortunately, the match was affected by all the drama.  Both players frustrated and couldn't focus on the tennis ball and their game plans.  Which doesn't make for a good match.  Altho Natalie came out on top, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2....both players were winners in life.  Standing tall on their convictions of truth and honesty.  Congrats to both Natalie and Nika for standing tall!

An hour and half after singles, Natalie and Emily took to the dubs court.  Seeded #1 we took an early lead winning the first 6-4.  The second set went a lil faster with "our team" taking a 5-0 lead.  Then lost two in a row, 5-2.  Em served for the set and match and "our team" was victorious.

Natalie has tomorrow off, and will just practice.  She will play singles on Thursday, verses the winner of the match of Elizabeth Fourer (CAN) (618) OR Andrea Benetz (ARG) (713) a qualifier.    "Our team" will play dubs vs. Jan Abaz (USA) and Nicole Robinson (USA), tourney ranked 1353.   "Our team" is tourney ranked 638....and #1 seeds.

Until next time.....Love and Blessings....Sherry

Time to focus on tennis!

Time to focus on tennis!  Tomorrow Natalie will play second on after ten....sooo noonish.  She will play the 8th seed Kukherchuk (RUS) (465).  This will be the first round of the main draw, round of 32.

Natalie will team up with Emily Harmen for doubles.  They are seeded #1 (WOOT), with Natalie having the highest doubles ranking in the dubs draw.  Their first round will be tomorrow, round of 16.  The opponents are Benetz (ARG) and Forte (BRA), who are ranked 1051 for this tourney.  This dubs match will be forth on...sooo.....threeish.

The weather is going to warm up for us tomorrow.  Should be near 70 degrees, which will be a nice change from the 40s and 50s we have had here in the "Sunshine State".  I get to watch that lil yellow ball tomorrow and report back to you....Love and Blessings....Sherry

Freezing in the Sunshine State....

Freezing here in the sooooo called Sunshine State.  Hopefully, by Tuesday the weather will be in the high 60's.  Until then, its layer time!

We are packing up today to leave Jacksonville and hear to Gainesville.  Natalie always enjoys her training here, and seeing friends.  Last night she had dinner with Jo Mather, which I'm sure they both enjoyed.  Today, she will train for the final time with Audra before we head south.

As mentioned in prior blog, I've started to "tweet".  And will do live scoring during Natalie's matches, and MAYBE a lil of my not so famous commentary.  You can follow us @sherrypluskota

Off to pack I go....will be following that lil yellow bouncing ball shortly and reporting back to you....Love and Blessings....Sherry!
